Eternal Life
The life of the age to come, given by God through Jesus Christ. It is unending in duration and different in kind from present life, and it is the stated alternative to perishing.
Also called: everlasting life, life of the age to come, zoe aionios
Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the Father and the Son, which makes it a quality of life and not only a length of it. It is described as given, entered, inherited and received, never as something every person already holds and merely relocates at death.
When the New Testament names the alternative to eternal life it reaches for the language of losing life: perishing, death, not seeing life, passing away, wrath, condemnation, destruction, and eternal punishment. Reading one item on that list as unending conscious existence makes it the odd one out among the rest.
Both sides agree that eternal life lasts for ever. The disagreement is over what stands opposite it, and whether that opposite is a continuing experience or a permanent outcome.
What this is not
Terms in this dispute are routinely collapsed into one another. These distinctions are what keep the argument honest.
- Eternal life is not merely endless duration, or the lost would have it too on the traditional view.
- It is not the same as the immortality of the soul, which Scripture does not attribute to human nature.
- It is not a reward earned; the New Testament calls it a gift.
